Sewanhaka Central School District

The Sewanhaka Central High School District was founded in 1926 as a “Central High School” to serve the then sparsely populated communities that made up part of Nassau County. By the late 1950’s, the post war baby boom had changed the single high school into a Central High School District with five buildings, serving students in grades 7 through 12. Located in the western portion of Nassau County, bordering the New York City borough of Queens, the District is the residence of roughly 135,000 people in four local communities: Floral Park/Bellerose, New Hyde Park/Garden City Park, Franklin Square and Elmont. Each community supports a component elementary district and sends two trustees to the Sewanhaka Board of Education. The five district high schools are home to over 8,600 students and 700 professional staff. Though the income range is wide, the people are primarily homeowners and taxpayers and share a fierce pride in the quality of their individual schools.

The District has been famous for decades, not only for its academic excellence, but also for its innovative offerings in the fields of Technical and Vocational education. The District is unique in offering a comprehensive high school education program to all school aged children as well as the only Evening High School program certified by the Board of Regents in Nassau County. The instructional program is rigorous and supplemented by enrichment courses and programs to meet the unique needs of every youngster in the school system. Additionally, numerous athletic and extracurricular programs continue to receive regional and national acclaim. All five schools in the Sewanhaka Central High School District have been awarded the National Blue Ribbon of Excellence and the School District has been designated a National District of Excellence.
