I was wondering if anyone has gotten called for an interview using this site? I heard a strange rumor about only people who's last name start with A,B or C get called. I can't see how this would be true but since more and more schools are using this site I'm getting nervous. I have yet to receive a call from any of the schools I applied to on this site.

So if you have gotten called please let me know. Also what letter does your last name start with?

Thanks!

I have had the same problem I have applied to so many schools through olas and have not heard anything. I think it is because so many people apply through olas since it is easy that they only all the best of the best.

This is how I got my job this year.  Don't give up!  I have gotten many interviews from OLAS and my name is at the end of the Alphabet.

I am a math teacher that applied to 30-40 jobs through OLAS and sent a hard copy of my resume and cover letter to all the schools close to where I am now living. Schools either didnt respond, or the sent a letter indcating that they do not want paper applications. I only recieved 2 replies from OLAS; neither resulted in a job.
However, since i recently moved here, i did not have my NY certification until late in Sept. that may have had an impact

I have received four calls from schools that posted jobs on the OLAS website. My last name begins with "R..."

I applied for two administrative jobs and OLAS and both called me for interviews, my last name starts with a "V" so the idea that only A-Cs get called is ridiculous!

I am living in NC and will be moving to Long Island in the spring. (Husband's job sends us to LI) I am currently teaching special education and completing my Master's while waiting to finish out my schoo year here in NC.  I have used the OLAS but have heard nothing:)  I love teaching and can't imagine what I will do if I do not get a job for the fall.  Any suggestions??  My husband is already in our new home and working. (Nesconset, NY)

Gee, this is weird.  I'm in the exact opposite situation.  I was born and raised on Long Island (not too far from Nesconset).  Got certified as a teacher in 1992 and couldn't find a job to save my life.  I went away for four years, moved back to Long Island from 96-98, subbed, subbed, subbed, applied to every district between Amaganssett and Queens and got two calls for interveiws in 2 1/2 years.

I finally gave up, moved to NC, and got a job almost immediately teaching 5th grade.  I've been down here 10 years and I'm never going back to Long Island.  I learned the hard way that there are more than 500+ applicants for every teaching position in suburban NY.  You will not get a job on LI unless you are sleeping w/ someone on the Board of Ed., or related to an administrator.

Good Luck!!!

If you're looking for a teaching job on Long Island, as everybody said, you better either a) know someone on the inside, or b) have a resume made of gold...literally made of gold. Someone previously said on these boards that 500+ people can apply for one teaching job on Long Island; I heard it was more like 1,000. Look it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that EVERYBODY wants to work on Long Island, and NOBODY wants to work in NYC. The working environment is better, the pay is better, and lets face it, you don't want to be driving through the 5 boroughs during morning rush hour. As a result you're gonna be duking it out with 1,000 people for that precious teaching job that you've been coveting for so long. My advice, bite the bullet and work in NYC for atleast a year, for nothing else than to get some cash in your pocket and something to put on your resume. If you absoloutely can not take working in NYC, then substitute on Long Island and pray, pray, pray it turns into something.

It is very difficult to get a teaching on Long Island! I have been applying via OLAS for over two years and have had just three interviews.

I HAVE actually gotten a few replies from this website! amazingly. I am SS ed and Elem ed..SS is 100 ppl for ever job and elem is 1000 ppl for every job so the fact that I have even been called I was so surprised!!! so far I was called in for 4 - 2 screenings, one I want a 6th grade SS - which is BOTH, so does that multiply the difficulty? who knows. I am a new teacher and only have subbed but the subbing has come from the site as well and from calling as follow up.

This I am surprised about, MATH and science are the 2 subjects they say you get a job right away!

Hi.  Unfortunatley, my husband is from LI and has taken his dream job here so chances of me going back to NC are slim.  I have had 2 interviews that resulted into nothing.  What are these people looking for?  Any suggestions?
