I am a parent of a child that is currently in special edcuation.  I am about to move into the Wyandanch school distict not by choice but thats not important.  He can;t go to provate school because of his learning disability so public edcaution is the choice.
What are my righs as aparent with a child that needs special education and the school district is not the best.  Can I go to the boaed and request that my son attends his current school distrci with peers he has been with since first grade or do my child have to endure what ever happens in the special edcuation classes in Wyandanch School districe.
I need help please .
Thank you

If you send your child to private school it is the responsibility of the district in which you live to provide the special services your child needs in that private setting.  Your school won't tell you this because it costs them money but because you pay school tax they have to provide the services.  Be sure to attend the CSE (commitee of Special Education)- you will be invited and request s parent advocate (which should by law be there).  The committee CAN NOT place your child in a setting without your approval unless they are willing to take you to court and the school will enver do that because of how much money it will cost them.  So do not feel nullies in to aggreeing with the team.  Tell the committee what you believe your child needs to succeed.  If you do not live in the district your child attended when he/she was younger they can no longer attend that district.  Your child must attend the district you live in and the committee can not change that- thats just the way it is because you are paying taxes for the district you live in.  Its a legal/political thing that can not be changed or worked around for any child not even ones with special needs.  The only way to keep your child in the district they were in is to move into that district.  To find out more about your rights as a child of special needs as the school for literature on parental rights- they should have a booklet for you that is from the State of NY explaining everything.  You are also welcomed to bring in someone who has a child with similiar special needs if you on someone to the meetings- you just need to inform the committee of this prior to the meeting.  Maybe they can help you with progam decision making.

Good Luck!
