racism amongst students and faculty members - 4/23/2007 6:33:10 PM

Hello, my child attends a highschool in Long Island (Nassau County). We are an asian family and ever since my son started attending this school since his freshman year, there's been so many problems. I need some perspective in this situation from the teachers. What are the district and school laws/ rules about racism among students in the school, and what are the teachers and faculty members ( deans, guidance counselors, principals) responsibility when faced with such situations in their class rooms. I'm confused as to why no one is putting a stop to blatant racism when they see it during their classes. My child is called a chink, which is a derogatory term for asians, students throw stuff at him during class, and yell at him, mock him and laugh at him. Why is it that none of the teachers consider this a serious problem and doesn't act appropriately and no one stands up for my child's rights. This has been going on for three years now and i've gone to several of the conferences with the teachers, and until now, I tried to see it from the school's point of view. I understand that there are hundreds of students in the school, and the teacher's cant look out for just one student. At the same time, this kind of abuse has been going on for 3 yrs now. It's really hard to say that all of the problems my child faces at school is his fault, yet none of the other students are suspended or penalized when he is. It's clear that my child is the victim here, yet for some reason no one is willing to fix this situation. And since no adult in the school will be responsible for their attitudes in this matter, i feel that my only option is to file a suit against the school.

But before I do so, I want to hear from the teachers of long island in this matter, and what your policy in this subject is.
Thank you very much

I am saddened to hear about your experience.  Perhaps you might consult with other members in your particular Asian background and see whether they might have any advice on how to proceed.  Consulting with an attorney and showing the attorney all that you have done to solve the problem could be productive.  Many Whites (Caucasian) tend to be jealous of Asians because of your academic success in school.  It's an unfortunate stereotype.  Many Jewish students encountered this same type of prejudice years ago and sometimes still today.
Keep talking with the school district.  They must provide a safe environment for learning and this situation is not acceptable.

Good luck to you and your child.

3 years is too long. I agree with guest. It is jealously and lack of empathy. some kids are just plain mean. You tried everything except a lawyer so try that now. I am sure that will solve things quickly. Too bad all you really needed was one teacher in the school who fought for him. I am a teacher, tell him I said he is a hero.

This is a terrible story. I am a high school teacher and whenever I hear racial epithets, I call the parent.  With Asian students in my classes I have seen the students that are weak academically tease them and say things like "Do you go home and study the dictionary?" because the student is bright and well spoken.  One girl responded: "No, I just sit and vegetate in front of Sponge Bob."  The bullying student was shut down immediately and the other students that heard her laughed.  After that, whenever that student answered a question incorrectly in class or was clearly not following, some of the students would say: "Too much Sponge Bob."  When it comes to throwing things at your child and being mean, I believe that you need to personally take the time to inform all of his teachers about it, and ask the teacher be vigilant of this.  It is not too much to ask of a teacher to be sure that bullying does not take place in the classroom.  Outside of the class, it is a different and more difficult problem.  Have you spoken to the principals?  They should be aware.  Racism  is NOT tolerated in school.

Good luck and I am sorry. Make sure your that your child understands that this is based on pure jealousy since Asian students are almost always among the top in the class academically, and teachers tend to favor them just because they are usually extremely respectful of us.  Keep speaking out against this until the administrators take action.  You have the right to ask about the punishment that the bullies receive, and I would also contact the parents personally.  This kind of stuff should not be happening in a diverse community like Long Island.

More bleeding heart liberal rhetoric.  Oh, those poor Jews!  They run the "public" schools today, so I don't know what prejudice you're talking about!

This is terrible.  No child should ever be bullied because of their background.  I'll bet most of these kids hear their parents use racial epithets at home and that's where they get it from.  When you see ill-mannered kids, take a look at their parents and their grandparents.  All too often you hear all three generations making the same prejudiced remarks.  Jealously does come into play, but bigotry is a lot of it also.  The teachers and administrators should put a stop to it.  However, their hands are often tied because when they go to discipline a student, the child's parent makes excuses such as "Not my Johnny!  He wouldn't say that.  He's a nice boy." or "You must have misunderstood him.", "It's just words, what's the big deal?" and "You'll be hearing from my lawyer."
