Does anyone know anything about the Longwood School District?  If so, please let me know what you think of it.  We are looking to move into that area.  I would appreciate any information you can provide me.  Thank you.

Gordon Heights is part of that district. My Uncle is selling a great home in that area that I would love to buy, but I don't want that district for my kids.

I agree with you I send my kids to out of district schools. The longwood stats are terrible

spend 15 minutes in Longwood's Walmart. Most of the young families moved out. Many families live in denial.  The academic statistics are miserable.

I did my student teaching at Longwood High School about four years ago. It was the worst teaching experience of my life. The elementary schools may be okay, but I would not send my children to the middle or high school, unless he/she is a very strong student and can be in all Honors level classes. The classes are very difficult to control in Longwood, and the administrators are not visible. The students are very rude in the hallways, and the police are often called for fights.  Choose another district if at all possible.

Longwood used to one of the better schools out here, but now it's considered the worst.  The test scores are very low and so is the graduation rate.  The taxes are out of control and the district is not worth a dime.  Ridge Elm is the best out of all the Elm schools.  But after that it goes down hill.  I lived here all my life and graduated from Longwood.  I want to get my family out of here before they get up to the junior high.  Even though I heard that the middle school is no better.  I would stay out of the district unless you can afford private school.

I totally disagree with all of your negative comments regarding Longwood.  I have two children attending Longwood schools, one in the high school and one in the junior high.  They went to West Middle Island Elementary and the Middle school.  We have had many positive experiences in each school.  Of course there have been minor problems along the way, but that would be true in any district.  My son has been in the accelerated program and both participate in sports and band.  There are many great oportunities in Longwood.  The key to a successful school career for any child is for the parents to be involved and aware of what your children are doing!

I have only heard negative things about Longwood.

I wanted to leave the district before my son was in the middle school however we didn't sell our house until the end of his first year in middle school and boy has it been a nightmare. His attitude completely changed the teachers don't have any of the students under control. The academics were better than Three Village but socially it's horrific. I think a better social climate for children is much more important, all the other academic filler stuff a parent can do. Principal doesn't get back to you. It's just a huge mess!!!!!!!!

Wow. I'm a student currently attending Longwood High School and I absolutely love it there. I'm in honors programs, and I am joining a school sport. I could not even imagine myself in any other high school, like it's not even funny. I'm not even that social and I pick up friends so fast some times. I think that despite what people say about our district, we have so much fun. We have so many different clubs and oppertunities.

Not only that, but the area is diverse. If you are racist and you don't like the district because it'd diverse, that's just wrong. Getting to know people of different backgrounds and from different social classes are a part of life, and I feel like if I didn't have that, maybe I'd have a different view on the world.

When I was young, my parents were told to not send me to Longwood, and that it'd be a terrible experience. Lies. I love Longwood so much. A lot of the students are really nice, and great to be around. You really don't know how great it could be to go to Longwood until you acctually try it.

Maybe you did student teach at Longwood, and maybe you did have a miserable time. I made a good percentage of my current friends there, and I still have them. I know a lot of parents are afraid of the fact that they don't have real walls in between classes. Well, when my Mom came for a tour of the building to see if it was distracting- I didn't even know she was there. We were sitting on the floor reading, it was one of my first few days in Middle School, but still it was fine.

I don't think that the school district is bad, and I'm pretty glad my parents sent me to Longwood and didn't move somewhere else. I'm in AP classes, honors classes, and some regents classes that are ahead of my grade. I love how they have different programs like the Writing Club, and then soccer. Then they have the Gamers guild, and other clubs in different grades. We have hte wonderful Character Breakfast, that I'm usually a part of, and not to mention the class that participates in a 'student congress' in Washington DC. Oh, and how can I forget the volunteer work students like myself do at the Empire State Games. Oh! And we also are getting help for preparing for college starting as young as ninth grade.

I love Longwood.

I have three children who are currently attending Longwood Public Schools and I pay $11, 000 in taxes. My children receive a wonderful education. I am a second grade teacher in another district for 20 years. My oldest daughter is taking many AP and honors classes and is involved with student government and many clubs and sports. My middle daughter is at the Jr. High and loves it. She also takes accelerated classes and is very involved with other activities. My youngest is in his last year at Ridge which has some of the best teachers you could possibly imagine. Any child who wants to get involved can find something that interests them. There are more AP classes offered than at other wealthier districts nearby. Come to a Longwood Football game and watch the Longwood pride in action.  I am proud as an educator and parent to have my children attend Longwood Schools. Enjoy a diverse community that loves their kids!!!!!!!!!!!

I am also a student at Longwood High School and I completely agree that I would not trade my experience here for anything. I completely agree that the districts diversity is nothing but beneficial overall. Thats what the real world is like so if you have an issue with that you really should do some soul searching.

I am involved in every program possible and regardless of the school you go to if you are not involved your students experience would be limited. There is and endless amount of clubs and programs for no matter what your child is interested in. You get what you put into it; and that applies to anything in life.

The AP and honors programs are full of driven students that apply themselves. Our school has so many more of these classes to offer in comparison to surrounding districts and a teaching staff that I am thankful to learn from. Check the stats if thats what you feel gives you a true representation of the school, but the numbers are nothing more than statistics of a test or two, not an accurate judgement of the enrichment programs and extracurricular activities offered and enforced.

Also highly involved in Student Government, I am able to aquire personal relationships with the Board of Education as well. I am so grateful to know first hand that they all legitmately care about the students and are supportive on many levels, especially with hearing of the scandals and such that other tax payers have to deal with locally.

The sports programs are top notch as a high precentage of our students are involved. There are numerous teams for each sport, jv9, jv and varisty levels, and an atheltic department that supports the students entirely.

I am extremely proud to say that I am a part of the Longwood School District and it disgusted me to read some of the ignorant comments made. I am nothing but an advocate for the schools and I am sure that you and your child would enjoy you experience here.

The first response received to this question is worrisome. Yes, the Gordon Heights community makes the school district diverse, and that is a good thing. Keeping your child out for that reason alone means, as the the young person said, that some soul searching may be in order. Ask for a tour of the schools, and if you decide to register your child, stay involved with the PTA, keep in touch with teachers, and get the student involved in extra-curricular activities. You'll find the Longwood community to be close-knit, with top-notch teachers and lots to offer your child to become a well-rounded citizen.
