I would really appreciate advice. We are considering moving to LI from Queens. My husband works near the Meadowbrook and Hempstead Turnpike. He wants to be within a 1/2 hour of there. Besides the distance to work, we are looking for an excellent school district and a 4 bedroom house under $800,000. Any suggestions? Thank you for your help!

Bellmore Merrick is great.
Masssapequa SD 23 is great.

I would start there,  house prices will be expensive there.  If you have more questions post them.

Hi,

I would like to ask you what your personal focus is with good schools.   Is it creativity, diversity, academics, arts, sports, special ed?  Each school district has it's good and bad points.  Mainly, check out thoroughly ALL info you can find in books and online, especially official standings.  (Talk to real estate agents with a grain of salt.)  Not all school districts are contiguous with village boundaries.  Don't buy a house and then find it's in another school district that you didn't realize.  The superintendent of schools in the district sets the "tone" for the district, so find out what he/she is into.

Here is a list I can recommend for you, based on experiences of myself and my friends who live in different school districts near Meadowbrook Pkwy. & Hempstead Tpke.  These aren't in any particular order.

East Meadow- Excellent for any type of music.  It's been a Grammy School district for a while now.  I have personally had my kids work with many of the music teachers in a music program over the summer (East Meadow summer music program) as well as during the year- Nassau-Suffolk Band.  Has Nassau County Medical Center.  No problem with your home price range.  Close to Meadowbrook Pkwy.

Merrick- Good all around for academics. No problem getting a house.

Garden City- Great for academics, sports, music and SEPTA (special ed).  Has big SEPTA with parents participation.  If your son or daughter isn't in sports it's much more difficult to survive socially.  The "jock-nots" have to be great in art, music or academics then.  Fabulous music department is another Grammy School like East Meadow.  Music teachers are inspirational.  Academics are traditional and they've had "Schools of Excellence" over the years.  They have 20+ AP courses at the high school taught mostly by wonderful teachers. Kids go to many Ivys- Cornell, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, etc.  Class of 2008 has at least 20 kids going to the Ivys.  Prices have come down, as they have in all districts, with houses.  You can get a house under $800,000 if you look closely.  Avoid southeast GC near Hempstead.  Main ethnic groups are German, Italian & Greek.  Some Asian & Indian.  Negligible Middle-Eastern, Latino & African-American.  Everyone mixes socially, which is good.  The "cliques" are more based on activities & interests.

Herricks- Great for academics.  Sports not emphasized as much since many kids are immigrants from Asian & Indian countries.  Kids also go to great Ivys.  Prices higher than in East Meadow.

Rockville Centre- Expensive houses similar in price to Garden City, but with more of a diverse population.  Good reputation for its schools.
