Hello, everyone.  I am hoping someone can help me and point me in the right direction.  My 8th grader just graduated from Jr. H.S. and has now been accepted into St. Mary's H.S. in Manhasset.  We are thrilled.  Here's our problem......the tuition is $7,300.  And yes, that is the only catholic school that will accept him, so switching to another one is not an option at this point.  I have not been successful in finding any type of scholarships or any type of aid whatsoever.  Our first payment begins in August, and I am struggling with how to afford the monthly tuition payment.  Public school is not an option that we would ever want to explore.  Can anyone steer me in the right direction?  Thank you in advance if you can, and thanks for even opening up this post and listening to my struggle.  Please keep my four boys in prayer.  We want to do the right thing for them and give them the best education that we can.  Thanks so much.

What public school district are you in that you can't send your kids to public school and let them attend CCD for instruction. My nephew just attended grades k-8 at st. marys and did not get into Chaminade and did not want to go to St. Mary's High School so he begged his mother not to go. St. Mary's is loaded with rough kids from queens. He is happy in public school now. Note he is not from Queens but lives in Manhasset.

financial aid may be too late in June. But the school can answer that.

Maybe she doesn't want her kid to go to public school.  Ever think of that?  CCD and Catholic education are not the same.  St. Mary's is a great school.  It's not filled with "rough kids".  You are still spreading your jealousy-filled lies and venom on this site.

You can try contacting the Tomorrow's Hope foundation.  Call the Diocese of Rockville Centre and see if they can help you.  It is very tough for those of who want our children to attend Catholic school but have difficulty affording it.  It is sad that the only option left for us is public school, where kids are allowed to curse and run wild, Jewish holidays are celebrated while Catholic ones are ignored.   Public schools cater to liberals.  All they learn in "CCD" is the Hail Mary and the Our Father, if that.  They only need to attend a class or two once every four or five years to receive the sacraments; it's a joke.  Don't listen to the anti-Catholic bigot on this site.  She's a liar.  If she spewed such venom toward any other religious group she'd probably be arrested.

She's not white trash like you are.  Your little dirtbag kids had no choice but to go to public school.  She wants the best for her kids, which is why public school is not an option.

Thanks to all of you who answered my question about deferring the cost of catholic school.  No, I do not live in a district that I would send any of my children to.  It is totally out of the question.  Any school that needs a metal detector as you enter the building, does not sit well with me.  Catholilc school is my only option.  Two of my sons have attended St. Chris with wonderful results.  CCD is fine, but I agree.........they need more than just meeting once a week in order to receive their sacraments.  They need that every day to day christian structure.  Tomorrow's Hope Foundation, unfortunately, stops at the 8th grade.  We are now entering into the 9th grade with absoutely no financial help whatsoever.  So, yes, it looks like I'm going to have to shop around for the best school loan that I can find.  There is only one income in the household right now, so we have no choice in the matter.  But thanks to all of you with THE KIND WORDS about my choice and about my choice to send my son to St. Mary's.  Thanks for your prayers as well.

I don't know too much but I know that you can always transferred down  -  Like Chaminade   down to Kellenberg.......... Just because he didn't get accepted   anywhere else  doesn't mean that  they won't take him..........

There  are schools   a little   cheaper-  at least $500 I don't know if that helps much  but  500 is 500

If you ever were looking for a reason not to send your kids to Catholic school, read just one more time, how this wonderful catholic school parent described this public school parent as white trash, and her kids dirtbags.         The person who suggested public school as an option, never stated anything negative about Catholic schools. She simply offered a solution that may offer some relief to your situation. What she does do, is remind us that children are  children. My children have attended Catholic school their whole life. They have close friends from both public, private and Catholic Schools. They attend functions at all of the schools. The childrens parents are all some of the greatest , most giving and caring people I ever met.    We can't always control what are children are exposed to, but to think they are exposed to more negative things in Public schools than Catholic Schools is borderline irresponsible. The decision we make on where to send our children to school is based on what we feel  may be best for our families. I'm happy with the Catholic schools I have sent my Children to. It sometimes was not easy, but I'm satisfied with most of the results. But Iam a little jealous of the special programs that the public school system offers that my children may have needed, and I wasn't able to take advantage of. I would have also liked to seen my children exposed to a little more ethnic diversity and economic backgrounds ,and see for themselves firsthand we are all exactly the same, who share the same feelings, need and wants. All people are good, sometimes we make bad decisions,no matter what school we go to.    Remember, no matter what they're exposed to, as a parent, you will always be the biggest influence in their life.                                                                                                                                                 By the way, the only difference between a school that has a medal detector, and one that doesn't is                 "a dangerous insane person has a better chance of getting inside the one without a medal detector"

I wouldn't count on Tomorrow's Hope.  You have nothing to lose except the $20.00 application fee by applying, though.  We were turned down for financial aid, and we have 3 in Catholic school.  We were told they only provide aid to 82% of families.  (It is difficult to believe that we are in the top 18% in income.) We appealed twice.  They asked if we had any "special circumstances".  I said yes, that my husband had been laid-off from work and still hadn't found another job, that we had two children with special needs and elderly parents with health problems.  I was told to write an appeal letter and "make it compelling".  There is one woman over there (I won't mention names) who is particularly nasty.  It takes forever for her to return phone calls and emails.  Meanwhile, she is getting a paycheck for being rude and lazy.  She always says "uh huh" whenever you try to talk to her.  Another employee over there told me that "we can't help you, go to the library and see if they'll help you."  No sympathy, no "I'm sorry we can't help you, but best of luck to your family".  Nothing.  I know someone in my parish with one child who received aid.  I asked why aid was given to a family with one child, but not too a family with three children.  I was given a vague answer, that "perhaps they needed it more."  As soon as I mentioned the extra expenses (which are not paid for by either the government, insurance, or the school district - believe it or not) required by my children with "special needs" the entire tone of the conversation went from bad to worse.  It was as if the Tomorrow's Hope folks skin crawled with the mention of "special needs".  So where are families like ours supposed to go now?  The public school doesn't want the special needs kids, they throw them in the basement or down the hall, isolated from the "normal" children.  The Catholic schools don't want them either.  So much for a so-called caring "Christian" organization.

What do you mean by transferring "down" from Chaminade to Kellenberg?  Kellenberg is an excellent school with a competitive admissions policy.  Get your facts straight.  I know there are a lot of good kids at Chaminade and not everyone there is rich, but I can't help but think of the Duke lacrosse players.  Even though they were exonerated, they're still spoiled, pampered, womanizing rich boys!  And they even gave Seligmann a medal!  For what?  Being rich???

Hi.  I'm new to this site, and have one child at SJB - we're struggling, but making it so far. (younger 2 at Public School because in the Elementary & Middle Schools, parents have more visible control and can be more involved - the HS is a different world)

that said - have those of you who have tried Tomorrow's hope and gotten not very nice responses - have you complained formally in writing about those you have dealt with, and copied the Bishop?  Complain, complain, complain - formally, with nice language and stating facts not emotions --   may not work, may fall on deaf ears, but you never know!  The Holy Spirit does work in mysterious ways!

Pray over it. Don't give up. ?Have you spoken to the school Campus Ministry?? They may also be able to direct you.

Thanks for your input, maybe the Holy Spirit is telling us we should put our kids in public school because of all the "politics" that goes on in Catholic schools.  I guess there are "politics" everywhere though, you can't win...

I feel compelled to respond to all of you in the Catholic/Public school controversy.  I attended Catholic School for 12 years, then public college for all degrees.  I taught in Public School for 10 plus years subsequently.  I honestly must say that it is a fact that Public Education offers more opportunites and more highly educated teachers as a whole.  The decision whether or not to send your child to public schools is a personal decision.  Each of you must make an educated decision about the school of choice and how it will "fit" your child.  Many have misconceptions about certain schools and unfortunately just listen to heresay.  I started a Not for Profit Corporation in my town to make people aware that they do have options.  Things aren't always what they seem. Fear keeps people from using perfectly good schools they pay taxes for.  A student can graduate from a private school and become a doctor just as easily as graduating from a public school and becoming a lawyer or a teacher.
The foundation of education starts at home.  It saddens me to think that a family is struggling to make tuition when another school might work out great for their son.  It is worth the try.  He can always be transferred.  I have friends who went to a school such as St. Mary's and have done nothing but drugs and didn't move on to college.  I'm an adult and still hear stories from recent graduates who tell stories of drinking and doing drugs right on school grounds.  This atmosphere can happen anywhere.  I saw it in my Catholic Elementary School and all girls Catholic High School.  Explore your options.  Visit the schools, spend the day.
Metal detectors are a postive addition to any school in today's world.  It does not tell anything about the quality of education a school has to offer.
Good Luck to all parents in your decision making.  Whether you decide to utilize Public or Private School, stay informed and completely involved in your child's social and academic life.

I have been a Catholic school teacher for over twenty years. I have a BS degree from St. John's University, a MS degree from CW Post and am working on another masters in administration from Fordham. I AM WELL QUALIFIED.i HAVE PERMANENT CERTIFICATION AND ATEEND NUMEROUS WORKSHOPS. hOW DARE YOU  SAYPUBLIC SCHOOLS OFFER MORE HIGHLY EDUCATED TEACHERS. gET YOU FACTS STRAIGHT AND STOP SPREADING rumors.

Make the best choice for you, Catholic or Public.  We have chosen Catholic for our own personal reasons and love the Faithful education our children receive.  I have a nephew that graduated from St. Mary's and is now a Senior at Dayton.  He did very well and the school is very good.

You can look to other organizations for help as well.  Many schools do offer scholorships (but there's not enough to go around)... also many Knights of Columbus and similar organizations run awards and scholorship programs for children attending Catholic schools.   I understand the one income struggle that goes along with the choice of a Catholic education.  There are academic awarads/scholorships and athletic types too.

You may be highly qualified however, you could use a keyboarding class. If you want to present yourself as a professional than you should use standard capitalization and punctuation. Proofreading your response might have been a good idea. Not all teachers in Catholic schools are certified. My husband taught in Catholic schools many years ago without certification. I know two teachers in the local Catholic grades chool who are not certified. I am not just talking about permanent certification. They don't have provisional certification and are not working on it.
