[:-] How does one get a response from these school districts? honestly, are they only hiring young teachers?
I am a former social studies teacher, (Brooklyn schools) who has been out of the classroom for a long time, I've lived in suffolk for 20 years, and but I wish to get back into teaching.. Ive been working in the telecommuications industry for 20 years.. I have a NYS certification for grades 7-12. Ive sent out resumes to every district on LI. and Ive only gotten 2 responses. both  declines.

Does anyone know of an opening  for a social studies teacher?

Where did you get your degree from?

If there is a web site somewhere that gives teacher salaries, I haven't found it yet.  I've tried Newsday and the AFT sites, and no luck.
I am also looking for a teaching job, in English 7-12, have a master's, and two years in an English classroom, newspaper and yearbook, have also taught Latin and pre-k.  I am over 50, and would like to get a real job before I retire.  Any clues on competing with 20 year olds?  Anyone hiring out there?

You can try Salary.com

I worked in the main office at a local high school in Suffolk County and handed out paychecks.  Teachers just starting out that were on contract made about $55-65K per year.  Teachers that have been there awhile made about $80k to over $100k.  There is one teacher who has been with the district for thirty years and he makes $105k plus he would get separate checks for being the advisor in clubs.  The assistant principals make about $130,000 per year.

You have to start out as a substitute teacher, making about $30-35K per year.  There are different levels of substitute teachers and different payscales.  After you're there for a couple of years, they may hire you.  It seems like you have to know someone to get into a district.  I would send resumes that were sent to the principal from "friends" to different depts with notes from the principal saying, "hang on to this resume, it looks like a good one."  Meanwhile, the person is just out of college with practically no experience.

I don't know of any sub making 30-35,000.  I do know that with a BS the average teacher starts at about 38,000$.

Being a sub doesn't guarantee you will get a job either.  It's all about politics.  Too many applicants for one position and the job is going to someone's niece or nephew

top 10 percentile for starting salaries is up to 41000 to start
bottom tenth percentile is 89000-96000
top tenth percentile for retirement is between 104 and 120

after 10 years - Masters plus 45, at a school in the middle. I'm at 70,000

It's based on experience in the school district. A starting salary for a teacher in secondary education in Nassau County is in the high $30s to low $40s. If a teacher could stay in the same district for more than 25 years, the salary could reach up to a $100,000 and more in some districts, and around $80,000 in others.

I'm a teacher (7 years) in a Nassau school
The last post nailed it.

Guest -> RE: Average Teachers Salary (2/8/2007 11:13:49 PM)

Can anyone tell me how to get into the Nassau County districts? I don't care which one, I just want to start teaching.

Guest -> RE: Average Teachers Salary (2/15/2007 10:50:02 AM)

LOOKING FOR A TEACHING JOB ON LONG ISLAND???  Be a Gay Man, a newly breast implanted, high heeled daughter, niece or "close personal friend" of the Superintendent...OR MOVE TO ARKANSAS TO TEACH!!!!

Guest -> RE: Average Teachers Salary (5/15/2007 10:55:37 PM)

whoa!!

Guest -> RE: Average Teachers Salary (5/21/2007 1:05:29 AM)

I"ve been looking since I graduated in '94.  My advice..... get networking.... you have to know someone.  The market is saturated.  If you really want a job, go to NYC schools and get a year of experience.

Guest -> RE: Average Teachers Salary (5/30/2007 10:30:25 PM)

Try North Babylon School District they're hiring 4 English teachers.

Guest -> RE: Average Teachers Salary (6/14/2007 6:22:43 PM)

Go to this link http://www.olasjobs.org/longisland/ to post your resume and apply for teaching jobs on long island.  I have my resume up there even though I have a position, but I have not applied for any jobs in the past few years.  I did get an e-mail recently about a sub position available, so I know that it is looked at.

Guest -> RE: Average Teachers Salary (6/18/2007 5:49:39 PM)

The average teacher's salary is $45k and up in Nassau County, I couldn't tell you about Suffolk.

I think that it is the same.

As far as that person that graduated in 1994 and is "still looking", do you mean that after 10 + years, you still want to be a teacher on Long Island?
I can tell you all this much that if that many years had passed, I would not be Interested in teaching anymore, if no one wanted to hire me. I can't imagine having to go on an endless round of interviews every summer for ten years.

I think it is safe to say I would have kissed teaching goodbye, farewell, as Heidi Klum said, Auf Wiedersehen.

You can't expect college educated people to scramble for years and years.

People aren't [:@]going to be teachers anymore.

They will tell administrators to shove it@!

Cheers!~[X(]

I'm that person that is "still looking".  I taught in NYC, but hated the commute, the neighborhood, and the overall lack of morale.  I am working in a non teaching related field and subbing when I can.  I know it sounds ridiculous, but I don't want to give up what I've worked so hard for.  I'm a good teacher, with no connections.  Someday it will happen.
