Why is everyone under the impression that the public school system does not teach morality and respect.  Every school I know of incorporates good citizenship and respect for differences in their curriculum.  Most include this in their mission statement.  There is a big distinction between religious values and fostering citizenship.  Any educational facility will provide the latter.  Public schools do not celebrate ANY religious holiday.  What they will celebrate are cultural holidays across the spectrum.  Chanukah is just that.  It is a part of the history of the Jewish people and not a celebration of their God.  I would have liked very much for our son to receive religious instruction in tandem with a high quality education.  It was high on our wish list when I began researching our education options.  I could not find a parochial school in my community that could come close to providing him the same level of instruction as well as the quality of the teachers and administration that he is getting in our village.  Combine that with the programs, enrichment and facilities he has access to as well as the financial gains and it was a no brainer.

I have my son in Holy Trinity High School  He came out of  public school most of his friends  went   to    the public high.

I choose a  Catholic  high school because wanted my son to have  the BEST education I  could give him..........  I look at it   as  though  He will responsible  for a family one &   Education  breaks  down  all doors.

I want  the  best for him..... My husband & I are products  of    city learning-- My husband  dropped  out  of   high school   I too.  Later  I went  back  for my GED  --

However   The schools  that we went to   didn't   care --
we were free to do whatever  we wanted   go in school and Hung  out   if  you wanted    sleep cause  you were tied    go to class put  your head on the table  and  go to sleep...  No  one  Call my mom  -- they  just didn't ''t care.........

even when  you went to class teach never knew  your  name ..........I look back    and  say  it was discussing.....................And my child would never attend    a public high school.............  I believe   and  absolutely NO one  could change my mind  that  Private/Catholic High School teaches a high level of education it's  just  not the same  and being that  my son will need to support a family  is  why I didn't  send  him to public

therefor I sent     my son  to H.T.H.S  all his  friend that graduated  with him  took and  advance  math class  giving  them  1 high school credit................  now all the boy  did very well  only   high school  got harder......
As time goes on   my son begins to struggle   in the math   he  stood after and with teacher  she'd would  help him  twice a week...........  he passed  the   class & movies on

his friend  a the public  school pass as so my the skin of their teeth.,

This  year   my son fail,  the  class  I  ask his  friends  to  please help & explain  some  of it to him (they were passing)  they use the same math book.... they looked  at  what  my son was doing  &  couldn't do it .......

.Had No Idea  what he was doing    ....

I couldn't understand  why?  Now I have to sign my son up for  summer school at  our public  high school..... when I fill out the papers it  all began to make sense..... The  work  my son was doing  the public school had as Math 12....mind you my son's going into 11th. this year  his friends couldn't  help him  cause even though they took the same  math class together   and  are  the same age same grade same math, my son is 6 months  ahead of his  friends  his  friends that  had  to  take the make summer school class  were in Math 11...........

Everythign began to make  sense....  Catholic high school teaches  a high level education

And I'm very pleased with  my  choice

my younger son    will start H.T.H.S this Sept.

#1 is Chaminade.  The best decision I ever made was to take my son out of the public school system in Nassau and send him to Chaminade. It's worth every penny.  No more violence, no more class disruptions, no more scantily dressed female students, no more "gangstas", no more "speds" holding up class time...the list goes on and on.  Now school is about respect, learning, self-esteem, self-respect, good manners, courtesy, values and morality.  I could go on and on.

The public school system on Long Island is in major trouble. Wake up Parents!

I live in the "poor section" of an affluent school district on LI. We are far from poor, but feel very out of place here. I love my home, my neighbors etc. I am very uncomfortable with the public school though. I am very involved in our local parish and we are thinking of switching our children there. The sense of disrespect, entitlement so forth is quite out of hand in our local public school. I am so troubled about this decision. Any advice?

not the Chanukah debate again

Chanukah is a Jewish holiday.  If we aren't allowed to celebrate Christian holidays in public schools, then why should we be allowed to celebrate Jewish ones?  That is discrimination against Christians at taxpayer expense!   The predominantly Christian "public" school in our area celebrates Chanukah but not Christmas.

There's no need for you to be rude and make anti-Catholic slurs.

Sacred Heart Academy and Our Lady of Mercy Academy are excellent all-girls schools.  Chaminade (although it is a first-rate school) gets all the hype because it is an all-boys school and we live in a male-dominated society.  You can't go wrong with any of the Catholic high schools on LI.  I love the structure and emphasis on community service that the Catholic high schools provide.  It's a question of which school suits your child best.  Good luck.  St. Anthony's has an excellent reputation.  I know kids that are students there, and they tell me they love the school.  St. Dominic's and SJB are smaller in size; that may work out better for some kids in terms of sports and academics.  One of the mothers from SJB was talking about how well-prepared her son was for the military because of the structure he had in high school.

I agree with most of what you say.  However, that's horrible the way you refer to "speds".  It's not very Christian of you at all.

The one in trouble here is you.  How dare you refer to developmentally disabled students as "speds"!  You're a hypocrite and not a very good Christian.  Consider yourself lucky that your child is "normal".  You belong at Chaminade with the stuck-up snobs.  Where is your compassion???

If I didn't have experience with the Catholic school system, and I read your post, I would avoid Catholic school - and especially Chaminade - like the plague because of your heartless, narrow-minded comments.  Do you go to church on Sunday?  Jesus loves EVERYONE - including the "speds".  Do you teach your children to make fun of the developmentally disabled?  Shame on you!!!   You're not a good Catholic at all.

What about the "NT" kids from MA who beat up the "sped" with Asperger's?  They are facing criminal charges.  They go to public school, but bullying (both physical and verbal) goes on in private schools also.  Those brats and their families are just like you and your family - arrogant and heartless.  I hope someday that you know what it is like to have a disability or a child with a disability.  What goes around comes around.  My heart goes out to the victim and his family.  Chaminade may be a "Christian" school, but there is nothing truly Christian about your attitude toward the disabled.  Your son is just like Seligmann and those other rich, spoiled pampered slugs from Chaminade who beat up on that poor girl and then were treated like kings because they were rich.  If they were poor and minority, they wouldn't have gotten away with it.

Does anyone know why Chaminade has no Advanced Placement courses?

From what I understand (and you should probably call up the admissions at the school for verification), Chaminade does not have any AP, nor regents courses because they do not have to abide by NYS Regents rules--in essence, the diploma that Chaminade men graduate with is "harder to achieve" than a "regular Regents based diploma."  This is basically because if you even saw one of their end-of-the-year comprehensive exams, (affectionately referred to as "comps"), then you would realize that the Chaminade diploma (along with the 75 average the students must maintain to stay in the school) makes the Regents look like a pathetic coloring book.

Also, Chaminade has a program called "Collegiate," which, at this point, may go by a different name.  This program is offered to students (at an additional cost) so that they may receive C.W. Post credits.  Essentially, seniors could complete 1 full year of college courses upon graduating from high school; a much better bargain than some AP courses, plus the students do not have to be subjected to AP exams.  The courses are taught on campus by qualified Chaminade teachers.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the info on Chaminade! The college credit program seems like a good idea except for the cost and acceptance by other schools.  It is a bargain only if the school one wants to go would accept the credits. So, a safer alternative is taking AP courses.  With AP offerings, would that hurt one's chance of getting into a good college?

What makes you such an authority?  Do you actually have children who attended all of these schools?  What do you have against SJB and ASJ?  There's no school that's "better" than another, it's a question of which school fits the individual child best.  No offense to Holy Child, but it costs a fortune.

Boy, there are a lot of snobs on this board.  It's true what they say - that there are two kinds of people who send their children to Catholic school - the snobby ones who think that they're better than everyone else and that their child's school is more prestigious, and the ones who send them their for religious values.

Just a quick note from a mother of a graduate of Kellenberg....My daughter graduated from there this past June 07 and it was definetly the best experience of her life.  Besides receiving a wonderful education she received something more.  She became a complete individual with values, thoughts, respect, and so on that you can only receive from K'berg.  I don't know what they do there but she just didn't even want to think about college in fear that K'berg was coming to a close.  Now that she finally adjusted to college away from home she still speaks about she misses everyone at K'berg.  This first thing she did was go back both Thanksgiving when she came home and Christmas....she can't believe that that part of her life is over.  Her constant comments are that when she gets married her daughters will definetly go to K'Berg and her sons will go to Chaminade.  It's something that can't be put into words unless you have had somebody go through (4) years and has been so happy about her education.  PS our daughter was not happy initially to be taken out of our school district but we explained to her that not everyone received this opportunity and that if she was unhappy after a year we would take her out.  PS our daughter has always been a terrific student and it stayed the same at K'Berg and she thanks her lucky stars all the time about her (4) years at school and grateful for all the  friends she has made from all around LI.  I know it will be something that she will always keep close to her heart and we thank our lucky stars that we were able to give her this opportunity....The brothers are definetly doing something right....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
