Looking for info about parochial schooling in Malverne.  We are moving there and hear mixed reviews about the main catholic school in town.  Any info good or not so good would help in our decision making.

It's great, but I suggest that you get your information from places other than anonymous chat boards like this one.  Maybe you should consider contacting the school itself, and asking about its faculty, curriculum, etc.  It is in the process of attaining Middle States accreditation, which gives it substantial additional educational credibility.  Good luck with your research.

We plan on visiting after the holidays when we are settled in.  I did visit the schools in Malverne when we were looking for homes.  I've been searching for any type of statistics as far as state scoring, teacher qualifications, etc.
I'm not having much luck with Lourdes however.  We are considering Davison Ave. as well.  I'll know more when were in place.  Thanks.

I lived in Malverne for 11 years. I did not send my children to Lourdes, but over the years, neighbors who did often had negative experiences. The class sizes were very large (30+). There were teachers who were uncertified.  The enrichment doesn't begin to match what is offered in public school in terms of music, art, extracurricular clubs, computers and technology, programs for gifted students, etc.

The local public schools are wonderful. It is a shame that people in Malverne cannot find it in their Christian hearts to embrace diversity and therefore shun the public schools.  A wonderful community resource goes unused. What a shame and how embarrassing in the year 2006!

People send their children to Catholic school for religious reasons.

Wonderful as compared to what?  The schools consistantly rank much lower than surrounding area schools.

Rank is based on test scores. Test scores reflect population of students more than they reflect quality of instruction.

Students from affluent homes tend to do better on tests. A district could have fabulous scores but YOUR child may not do well OR a district can have mediocre scores but YOUR child will do very well. 

Show me a district with real challenges that manages to keep test scores respectable and going up each year, and THAT suggests there is some high quality teaching going on.

    Why don't you forget about wasting so much money on Catholic schools and send your kids to MALVERNE PUBLIC SCHOOLS. I am white. However All these white parents in Malverne make me sick. The bottom line is they don't want their kids going to school with the black kids from Lakeview on the other side of Ocean Ave. Malverne high school only has about 500 kids (much less than maximum capacity), because most of the white kids are at Sacred Heart!

You're just a foolish liberal who has no clue as to what you're talking about.  You're an anti-Catholic bigot.  I guess your child wouldn't be smart enough and/or well-behaved enough to be accepted into a Catholic school, and you're jealous.  If you did your homework, you would find that there are many African-American students at Sacred Heart (as well as other Catholic schools) and there always have been.  In fact, in most districts, there are more minority students in the Catholic schools than the public.

You're kidding right?  More minorities in Catholic?  Only Holy Trinity, which brought in African-American students in the early 80's to maintain enrollment and St. Mary's which drew from the City has a higher than average number.  How about Brentwod that's 80% Hispanic or Amityville, or Huntington or just about anywhere.

looking to pull kids out and find better school they really dont have any kind of extra help programs. could be better need change been there two years kids like catholic school just not that one any other good catholic schools in islip area.

Sacred Heart and SJB have TONS of minorities.  Sacred Heart has had minorities for years.  Maria Regina HS had tons of minorities!!!  White people from lily-white Oceanside could have sent their Catholic kids to lily-white Oceanside High but they opted for a Catholic school with a large African-American population.  Why?  Because they wanted their children to to receive a Catholic education.  Race is NOT nor has it ever been an issue.  I know!  You don't know what you're talking about!  You stupid liberals just assume things.  Shame on you for being such an anti-Catholic bigot.  And how about Oceanside, Hauppauge, Garden City, Smithtown, Jericho, etc. which have always been lily-white.  All PUBLIC schools!!!  How dare you make false assumptions about Catholic schools!

I know for a fact that you are lying about Holy Trinity bringing blacks in.  I have lived on Long Island for my entire life.  What if I made up lies about public school districts or non-Catholic schools and tried to promote them as fact?   You should be banned from this board for your shameful anti-Catholic bigotry and your lies!  You are jealous that the Catholic school system is so successful.  What happened?  Did you and your kiddos get rejected?  Look at the facts, and not your liberal anti-Catholic rhetoric.  Enjoy your "public" school system with its anti-Catholicism, "secular humanism", bratty kids and lazy, uninvolved parents.

Take your bigotry elsewhere.  You wouldn't dare make such remarks about Jews, gays, Blacks, etc. that you do about Catholics.  People don't want their kids to go to public schools because they want their kids to have discipline and values, which are not taught in public schools.  I guess all those African-American and Hispanic students just wear Sacred Heart uniforms for fun.

Almost every one of these posts speak to race and religion.  Not one of you mention quality of education.  If you want to give your child the best education possible send him to a public school.  The teachers are all qualified in their instruction-not true in Catholic schools.  The class sizes are usually MUCH smaller giving your child more one on one instruction and they don't need to eat lunch and have assemblies in the gym or have recess in a parking lot or on a side street.   If you want your child to be disciplined and have high morals then you and your spouse better get to work. That's your responsibility. My children go to school for an education.  Why on earth would you leave that to any individual outside your household?  There is a reason the diocese is closing schools all over the area.  Ask any teacher you know where the best education is found-they are in the business-they know!  As my 5 year old says-Use your noggin!

My children attend Catholic school.  They do not have recess in a parking lot.  They have a playground, athletic fields, a gym and outdoor basketball courts.  They have a cafeteria, which is separate from the gym.  Their class sizes are comparable to the local public schools.

More lies from you.  You have some nerve.  The diocese is not closing schools one after another.  Some schools have merged to save money.  Catholic schools do not get the big bucks from the government that the public schools do.  They have to rely upon tuition and donations.  Catholic high schools are thriving.  Many people whose children attend public elementary and middle school opt for Catholic high school.  You have to take an admissions test.  The academics are far more rigorous.  The expectations for student behavior are much, much higher.  Students are required to do community service.

No one said anything about leaving teaching morality to an individual outside the household.  Unlike the public school, the Catholic school educates the whole child.  Values that are taught at home are reinforced in a Catholic school.  Some of the public school children are not taught values at home, and they don't learn them at school or CCD either.

Do you see how some of these public school kids behave?  They hang out at Wendy's, etc. on their skateboards.  They spend their afternoons riding bikes around the neighborhood.  They bully smaller kids.  They ring doorbells and run. They look for an open door or window and try to break in.  We've had several burglaries in our neighborhood.  All public school kids.  Where are their parents?  You'd think these kids were all orphans.  The parents give lame excuses about having to "work", but nobody works all day, every day.  The parents are just too lazy to take care of their kids.  So these kids become the good neighbors' problem.  Don't tell me the kids are "bored" and have nothing to do because this is not a poor area.  I guess their public school teachers don't assign homework or the kids just don't bother doing it and get away with it.  People spend big bucks on landscapers and pools but they can't enroll their child in swimming, tutoring, ceramics or whatever to keep him/her out of trouble after school.
