Main Entry: cath·o·lic Function: adjective COMPREHENSIVE , UNIVERSAL ; especially : broad in sympathies, tastes, or interests Apparently not in your world. Have you like many others, twisted and manipulated the Word of God to suit your own needs? And did you notice the obvious omittance of "classier" in this definition, you're probably assuming that the editor of Merriam Webber went to public school! Proud Catholic Parent of Public School Children

To the woman who said "The Catholic school families are generally much classier than the public school families. " You are obviously too disillusioned to ever be saved. I hope you feel embarrassed, but, you probably don't. I was so taken aback by what you said, I was embarrassed for you. Knowing that people like you exist makes me very sad. I graduated Malverne High School in 2005, so I'm going to assume that you are at least 20 years my senior, which speaks volumes considering that your selfish, close-minded views caused me to be nearly speachless. I hope you don't really feel that way, or in any case, don't approach every situation with that kind of audacity. God Bless! Justine Dwyer =)

Justine, It's "speechless", not "speachless". Have a nice day.

I hope no one considering a move to Malverne will give too much credit to one or two posters who seem more interested in making insulting assumptions about our diverse community and wonderful schools. The vast majority of people I have met here are intelligent, family oriented people who are trying to make the best decisions they can for their children. I have lived in Malverne for 15 years. My children attend public school and we are quite happy with the schools here in Malverne. I actually grew up in NHP and went to Holy Spirit Grade School and St. Mary's High School. Unfortunately, Holy Spirit was closed last year due to declining enrollment. Although I am more familiar with a Catholic school education, I decided to send my kids to the public schools here after visiting the schools and being impressed with teachers there and the overall environment. I was concerned about Our Lady of Lourdes because of the large class sizes. But many of my neighbors send their kids to OLL and they seem generally happy with the school. I understand the school now tries to keep the class size at around 30 children per class so perhaps that is less of an issue now. There are also several other Catholic schools in nearby communities if someone desires a Catholic education for their children. There is St. Anne's in Garden City and Our Lady of Peace in Lynbrook. I hear good things about both of those schools as well. We also have the Waldorf School and Lawrence Woodmere nearby. So there are a lot of options. Jeanne

Jeanne, Thank you for posting. Some folks really got off-topic here. We started talking about one specific school and it turned into a public vs. catholic debate for some posters. Some people are making assumptions about certain schools or districts - both private and public - based on second hand knowledge and hearsay. The parents who have children that attend OLL or the Malverne Public Schools are the ones with first-hand info that can best answer questions about those schools. Then, parents considering Malverne Public Schools or OLL can take that info, visit the schools, and then make an informed decision about what is best for their child. I know one person who went to OLL, but that was over 20 years ago. Family said they were happy with the school; she turned out ok. I know another who went to Malverne schools, the family was very happy with the education their child rec'd, he turned out ok also. But I'm not equipped to answer questions about those schools. To all the posters who have personal (preferably recent)experience with Malverne schools or OLL that have posted here trying to help other parents make a decision - thank you! Sorry if I sound preachy and wordy, but let's try to stick to the topic at hand here folks.

I stumbled across this website out of curiosity. In response to the first person back in 2006 who asked for feedback on catholic versus public in malverne - here's my response. For the record, I sent my children to OLL and catholic high schools in the area. I have lived in Malverne for more than 20 years and at the time I was making my decisions about catholic versus public, Malverne schools had a negative reputation. People were pulling their kids from malverne elementary schools and either putting them in OLL, OLP or moving out of Malverne. There was a hefty waiting list for OLL. While OLL was not perfect it was a great place to send the kids, although I did have issues with the small size of the school population (one class per grade) and the quallity of the education as the kids got into the upper grades. What made OLL so good for our family was the other families there. The families are committed to excellence for their children and in the elementary catholic school environment changes can be effected quickly and easily. Every family got involved in all aspects of the school. Back then the same could not necessarily be said of the Malverne schools. In fact, there are several Malverne School District teachers and employees who sent their children to OLL and catholic schools; the teacher of the year being one of them. There are also families who sent their children to the public school until the nineth grade and then sent them off to catholic High Schools. This is very common. I think a lot has changed since then and I think the Malverne school parents and educators have mobilized and have been effective in making changes so that the public school has become more desireable. If I were the parent of elementary school aged children I would send them to the public school. thanks for listening . . .

You are a bigot and an idiot. Someone should call social services and take your child away from you. You are brainwashing your child to hate people who are different from you. Shame on you. You don't leave it up to someone outside your household. You teach values at home and they are reinforced in school. Everything you have said on this board has been a lie. We get it. You're anti-Catholic. You are jealous of people who are better than you. Suck it up. People have much bigger problems in life. I think you are a hopeless cause. But for the sake of your child, I implore you to find a decent therapist. Send your child to live with relatives, or any responsible adult so that he/she will have a decent chance in life.

Interesting. Public schools pay teachers more $, but they don't educate the whole child. They don't offer the structure and discipline that private schools do. Private schools kick the troublemakers out. They have more parental involvement.
