Hi! Does anyone know of a good Special Ed. Program that takes out of district kids. I have a 6th grader in Middles School. She has Autism. She has been in inclusion classes since Elementary School. Middle School is turning out to be a disaster. Would consider a good autism program if anyone out there knows of any. Thanks.

Child who have Autism have a lot of support out there. I taught children with autism for a year at the Developmental Disabilities Institute. I believe a big fountain is the Young Autism charity. I would try to contact them and ask them for the best school they believe is good for your child. Also, depending on your school district, some school district have programs in it for children with autism. If they do not, do your research. There are districts out there that do have good programs. I believe Applied Behavior Analysis was a great way to modify academic and behavioral behaviors. On another note, if your school does not have a program that focuses on Autism, you may look into another school like I stated before. However, I believe under the federal law No Child Left Behind, if you find a local school where there is a better program for your child. Your school district may have to pay to send your child, because they are not PROVIDING THE APPROPRIATE SETTING FOR YOUR child.

Hi also want to find out which schools accept out of district placements - I do know Half Hollows School District has about the best special ed situations, but was told they do not accept out of district. I think Northport does, but if there are other good districts in Suffolk that do, I would also like to know for a girl entering 8th grade in fall, 7th grade she fell apart.

in regards to Cross-District & half hollow hills, contact western suffolk boces, they have programs in place in the Commack school District for ABA, Behavioral, Autistic, etc that other districts in Suffolk send children to, however, you'd have to approve a BOCES "packet" to go out to see if your child qualifies. Call & find out, good luck.
