Orientation = infomercial - 5/9/2006 10:39:38 AM

I attended the Massapequa High School orientation for the incoming 10th graders last night.  There was a powerpoint presentation showing the statistics of how many graduates go on to college, the amount of scholarship monies awarded to seniors, etc.  The outgoing principal spoke then introduced the incoming principal, then the dean of students, athletic director and so on.  We sat in the auditorium for 1.5 hours and listened to the drivel about how great the school is and how the students should get involved in sports or activities.  Then they threaten to take away sports if the budget isn't passed.  There was NO tour of the building, so my child did not see and science labs, or language labs (if they even exist).  There was no band or orchestra display.  Could not the music dept. play a tape of past concerts?  Could not the art dept. display student work?  Now, my child will step off the bus in Sept. and not know the building floor plan except for a poorly printed map that is not very understandable.
During the powerpoint presentation all my cynical mind could think was where are the statistics about how many times the police were called to the building?  How many gang members are enrolled?  How much smoking goes on?  What do they do with the bullies?  How much marijuana is sold?
The whole orientation was one giant infomercial for the budget.  Notice how the orientation was one week before the budget vote.  I am not that gullible.

What you have mentioned is worth sending directly to the principals office. Why not?  Maybe, they need to realize the importance of making families, children especially, feel comfortable about entering their school.  The more comfortable and knowledgable a person is .. the easier it is to part with their "budget" dollars.
