Need Special Ed Help...integrated elementary classes - 2/21/2007 7:38:23 PM

My son will be starting kindergarden in the fall and is currently in a full-day integrated (inclusion) class now.  He receives speech, PT, OT and play therapy during the school day. My district does not have any integrated (inclusion) classes at the elementary level.  So informally the district has told me that he will be placed in reg. ed. kindergarden and get pull-out resource room.  In my mind, this is not an appropriate placement for him.  Afterall, with all the other therapy pull-outs, how in the world will he be able to keep up with the curriculum and pace of a regular class?  When I asked about him being placed into another district that had integrated kindergarden, I was told that although this is a reasonable request, the district has a hard time placing kids because other districts want to fill their integrated classes with kids from their own district.  Which honestly, makes sense to me.  WHY my district does not have any integrated elementary classes is a big mystery, but none the less, they don't and it doesn't seem like they will come September.

So what do I do?

We don't mind moving to another school district IF we can find one that has good integrated and gifted programs (2 other children on our family and they are in the gifted program now).  We live in Western Suffolk and would like to remain around this area-- going as far west as south bellmore and as far east as babylon/west babylon.  would also consider commack.

Anyone have any experience with special ed/integrated classes???????

Thanks very much!

I teach in an integrated classroom.  Even though my students are in an integrated classroom or Co-teaching (that is what my district calls it) they still get pulled out for OT, PT, Speech, and counseling.

Your son is entitled to be placed in an appropriate environment for his learn abilities.  Talk to his therapist about getting help with a 504 plan.  You didn't mention your district but being that the state is trying to mainstream as many special needs children as possible it seems that all districts should have some type of an inclusion class.
