I'm 49 years old and ever since I was a young child, all I ever wanted to do, was teach. Unfortunately life got in the way and I became a well paid secretary for about 20 years. I had a late life baby and now have a 9 year old. Next year she starts middle school and I want to return to work -- but this time, I want to go after what my heart always wanted -- to teach. I don't have a college degree, but I do have about 30 credits from many years ago. I would be happy if I could become a teaching assistant, but don't have the resources - time and money - to go back to school full time. My main interest is teaching grade school. I called a few school districts today to find out what requirements are expected for an assistant teacher. I was told that I needed a teaching degree for that position. After searching the web, I found that NYC has programs for a midlife career change to teaching. Does Nassau or Suffolk county have anything comparable? Can anyone give me a suggestion to get me on the right path. Do you know of any school districts that don't require a college degree to become a paraprofessional? Any advice you can give would be so appreciated. Thank you. Feel free to email me at rogandro@optonline.net Thanks again.
