I am disappointed that the administration has stopped a child from bringing a helper dog to school in light of the recent advancements in ADA laws.  According to the AP wire, if the board of education was made aware of the family's decision to bring the dog to school and the boy was denied, then shame on you! Either the Board of Education needs to accept responibility for the school's actions or the the child should be allowed to have the use of the dog.

Most are aware that assistance dogs are working dogs allowed in public settings when the dog is working.  An assistance dog is 100% bound to their person and must create an integral relationship with that person with whom s/he will work with for the dog's lifetime.  The bonding process must be absloute in all situations, including in public as well as in the home.  That includes educational settings.

Please allow your student to attend classes with his assistance dog.  This will allow the dog to bond and serve his master for many years.

Thank you.

Not allow a trained helper dog to assist a disabled student?  Unbelievable. A disgraceful decision by the school authorities, board, and fellow members of the human race.  You should be ashamed.

My dad is deaf and folks don't know what a stressful thing it is to be deaf. He lost his hearing in the war. He depends on our (non service dogs) for the telephone, someone at the door and other daily task. It is ashame that the school is not aware of the ADA Act. I encourage everyone to fax Senator Hillary Rodnam Clinton at (631)249-2847 to look into this matter. Another deaf organization is Long Island Region Advocates for the deaf fax (516)248-2290.

The Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and the National Association of Attorneys General have formed a Disability Rights Task Force to promote and protect the rights of individuals with disabilities.

We have found that many businesses across the country have prohibited individuals with disabilities who use service animals from entering their premises, in many instances because of ignorance or confusion about the animal's appropriate use. This document provides specific information about the legal requirements regarding individuals with disabilities who use service animals. It was prepared by the Task Force to assist businesses in complying voluntarily with the Americans with Disabilities Act and applicable state laws.

Twenty-four state attorneys general* are distributing a similar document (including state specific requirements) to associations representing restaurants, hotels and motels, and retailers for dissemination to their members.

We encourage you to share this document with businesses and people with disabilities and their families in your community.

Hello....I, too, am horrified that a school is denying a student access because of their ignorance about service dogs.  We send children to school to learn to become responsible adults, to learn how to negotiate their way in the world....and THIS is how we are "educating" them?  The school, the school district and the town should be ashamed.  I hope enough pressure from everyone will make these 'blind' administrators see the light.  Blessings on the student and dog and the school.

Timothy Voels, Principal, you should be ashamed of yourself. How do you sleep at night?  It is no wonder so many students show such a lack of respect for their "superiors" in education. You are a disgrace to the profession, and truly represent "The Peter Principal" (sic)!!

Greetings from Canada. You Americans continue to astound us with your antics. Banning a hearing aid dog from school strongly reinforces my personal opinion that teachers, principals and superintendants are the most stupid, useless, yet arrogant people on the planet. Is the superintendant involved also a southern baptist by any chance? After he pulls his head out of his behind, he needs to be fired!

What a shameful situation you have gotten yourselves into.  You are worried about those children with allergies to dogs!!  Do you not have a school nurse that can tell these children to take a claritin or allegra? (They are available ovetr the counter)  I am sure that their doctors would write the prescription.  I am a person that has many allergies to perfumes, cleaning products, cigerette smoke.  What I have is called reactive airway disease and vocal cord disfunction.  I could have a hard time breathing around these things.  I am horrified that you are using allergies as an excuse not to allow this childs helper dog into your school.  People dont stop wearing perfume or stop smoking even though I am compromised by their actions.  Disallowing this childs helper dog into the school is not only illegal in so many ways it is also compromising this childs future.  Isnt a school suppose to teach children to live a better and educated life.  I am afraid that you are teaching this child and his family something different. HOW IGNORENT PEOPLE CAN BE!!
Teachers and principals are praised constantly about the career path they have chosen on TV etc.  (ex Oprah Winfrey show)  If they are suppose to be the example that our children follow.  I hope that none of the children in your area learn from the teachers, staff and board of this school.  What is even more horrifying to me is that the teachers of your school sit by wathing this happen.  Sure if you were incredibly ignorent (which you have proven to me that you are) you would terminate their contract.  This would again be illegal but at least they would be fired because they did something to help a child and isnt that what teachers are suppose to do?
LET THE DOG IN THE SCHOOL AND STOP BREAKING THE LAW!!  THIS CHILDS GRADES ARE SUFFERING THIS SHOULD TELL YOU SOMETHING.

Normally I don't take the time to find a way to express my feelings.  But upon reading this story, I felt compelled to write to SOMEONE.  IF anyone knows the address of the school district's office, please forward it.

I am amazed and ashamed for the actions of this school district's people of authority.

While it can be argued whether or not a service dog is required for the child to LEARN, it is undeniable that the service dog is required for the child to LIVE.  What happens if there was a fire?  Who will notify the child to escape to safety?

If the principal is worried about allergies, is he willing to sacrifice the safety of this one child for the POTENTIAL allergical reaction of other children?  If the principal is concerned about the dog being disruptive to the class, anyone who has experience with service dogs will tell you that most owners will ask that other people do not PLAY with the dog as it intrudes on their purpose and disrupts their training which is to guide the disable.

I do hope that we will hear shortly that the school district realizes their mistake and change their ban.

I am partnered with a 2 year old labrador retriever named Hoagie. He is a seizure alert/ mobility dog. I am a permanent and total disabled veteran and I have seizures and spinal damage with prior spinal surgery. Hoagie can tell be anywhere within 40 minutes before a seizure happens, he nudges and rubs my legs, usually around the knee. He is about 95% accurate. He also helps me with balance and support to counteract problems with my spine and medication side effects. When Hoagie alerts me, as a diabetic I take my blood sugare and was surprised to find that he has also alerted me when my blood sugar gets too high or low. If it is normal, I know I will ususally have a seizure. Since my seizures are caused by stress and fatigue, his early warning give me time to rest and relax, and although my smaller seizures still occur my large grand mal seizures are reduced by half its normal.
I would like people to know that the reason Hoagie is atune to me is that we have boned well, he knows me better now and I understand his alerts better. Bonding is important. I would hope that the school board might reconsider and at least try it in a controlled setting where they can monitor him and others so everyone is safe. Other school districts allow assistance dogs and even employ disabled persons with them, and all have survived. Taking precautions are great, and respecting others with disabilities is great, but denying someone an accomodation because of another is wrong. I will pray that you will find a way to allow John Cave to have his hearing animal, and put this mess behind you. This has gotten way out of control. I wish that I could explain or help in some way to explain the needs of a assistance dog team, I will be checking here from time to time, please leave a post if I can answer any questions.

Wow. So many of you are so fast to blame the school.
The school (and the court) are both aware of the relevant laws. The kid is accommodated just fine and used to ride his bike to school with no problem. The dog was a christmas present, he has 70% hearing and speaks well (I heard him speaking in the courtroom). A classmate of his and his math teacher are deathly allergic to dogs. The first day he was in court the fire alarm went off and the dig did nothing. The day I was in court the dog also didn't respond as he was trained to do.
