Hello there,
Is this a new site?  I came across it while looking to find out my sons school closings that are coming up.  I was surprised to see only 2 postings.
Hopefully more people will start to post.

Hi may name is Arzu, My son is only 3 1/2 now, and I was searching for pre-k.  Come to find out our school district doesn't have it, but few blocks futher they do have a pre-k but I can't register him, because we don't pay for their taxes.

Welcome to Long Island.  We have what 58 independent school districts on the Island.  Pre-school?  Right!  Go with the flow and understand that Long Island is somewhat unique in how they divide their districts.  No, you can not use a library in another district if you do not live in that district, unless you want to pay through the nose for a card.  Perhapes, someday, they will change the system, but I doubt it.

No, the county and state have very little to say on how the districts conduct business as long as it is within the guidelines.

I am new to NY and Long Island, and I am in the East Meadow Union Free District.  I thought schools here were state-run, but it seems it is all up to each individual district.  I am soooo confused, but the way I understand it, you can't enroll your child into Kindergarted unless they are turning 5 by Dec. 2st.  SO my daughter, who'd birthday is Jan. 7th, just turned 4 this year.  She will not be eligible for Pre-K this year, so she will have to go next year at the age of 5.  She is already advanced for her age, although I am sure she will get SOMETHING out of Pre-K.  I hope anyways.  The program is cheesy anyways because like the KINDERGARTEN too, it is only 1/2 days, and the prek is only TWO DAYS A WEEK!!  What is the point, really....?  I just called the school and was in tears  when she told me that my daughter has to attend PREK instead of K next year!  I think just being around other kids will keep her happy, but she is not going to learn anything new academically....She is going to blow them all away!!

Yes, you can use a library in another district.  I do it all the time.  There is a centralized system in place.  You can check out books at any library and return to any library.
