Dear Nysut members,

In the new issue of our paper NEW YORK TEACHER, our union bosses insist in telling you of their endorsement of Eliot Spitzer for Governor.  That’s fine; I have no problem with this.  However, I feel they should also include in this article that during a live debate on July 25th against his primary opponent Tom Suozzi, when asked if Private schools were better than public schools, Mr. Spitzer said “yes”, and Tom Suozzi said “no”.  In fact, nysut very softly and “quietly” endorsed Mr. Spitzer 2 weeks later after his answer to that question.  Now, of course I am going to have a few critics respond that he is for public schools and he really didn’t mean it that way, etc, etc, etc.  But the reality is when he was offered a chance to debate Tom Suozzi nine more times across the state, he refused to do it. Maybe then we actually could have heard or someone could have asked him why he thought private schools were better. People in Syracuse and Buffalo are upset he didn’t show for the debates.   Mr. Spitzer is hoping no one cares and just the same few people come to the polls and vote.  Tom Suozzi has been grass rooting since February.  The polls show he is down.  This is because they only poll someone that has voted in  3 straight elections and primaries.  They never call the new comers or people that want to make a difference.   Tom Suozzi is for public school education.  His kids go to public schools.  He brought up the key issues in this campaign way before Mr. Spitzer.  The New York Times in an editorial even said it.  I urge all fellow Nysut members that are democrats to vote for Tom Suozzi on Tuesday Sept 12, 2006.  Together with your help we can make a difference for education.

Vincent Suozzi
