My husband and I are considering moving to East Moriches and we are a little concerned that the budget did not pass. Has this happened before? Is this something that is a problem every year? I am a teacher in Middle Country and know how difficult it is to recover from a failed budget. Any information anyone can offer will be appreciated.

Hello, is there any feedback you can share on Middle Country, being that you are a teacher there?

It is a much better school district than we are often given credit for. I have taught there for the past 9 years and have seen continuous improvement at all levels. Were you looking for specific information?

I have been keeping an eye on the test scores and while there has been improvement in some ares, I still have concerns. The scores continue to trail Sachem in almost all categories. The results from Eugene Auer were particularly surprising as they were not very good compared to other nearby elementary schools. My kids would be going to Auer, Dawnwood, and Centereach High School. So any info on those schools especially in comparison to surrounding districts would be helpful. Thanks again.

It is really a matter of what you feel comfortable with. I am not a resident of either district but would feel better sending my daughter to Middle Country because I know the inside scoop. You have to remember the test scores you see can not really be compared from district to district (although Newsday seems to think so) because there are so many factors to take into account. A big point that is never mentioned is that Sachem sends many of their special ed students to BOCES programs while Middle Country teaches them in-house. Therefore, MC scores will refelct that many of the Spec Ed students take the state tests (whether they can pass or not). There are quite a few districts that use BOCES programs and don't have Spec Ed students' scores in the schoolwide data which is why some districts look superior over others. As far as the differences within Middle Country, it is the same thing. The past few years there have been more Spec Ed classes at Auer, Stagecoach and New Lane. We have also added inclusion which affects data reports. I would suggest speaking with someone in the districts instead of taking data stats straight from the newspaper. Make sure you ask who is inlcuded in the scores. If it is only reg ed classes then you know the results are inflated. Hope this helps.
