East Islip School District - 8/22/2006 7:48:34 PM
Guest
Hi -
I am a Nassau resident, who is looking to move further east.  My family and I are looking at houses in East Islip, but we really don't know anything about the area/schools.
Can anyone be of assistance?
Thank you!

I went to East Islip and the reputation that East Islip has a good school district is more hype than a reality. They pay some of the highest taxes and are constantly on austerity. I moved there from Bay Shore and I learned things in middle school they were just learning in high school. In the 70's there was a high crime rate and alot of drugs(mostly sold by the wealthy students). I can honestly say I'm not sure what the status is today. Contact the local precinct.

I live in Islip SD, which is next to the E. Islip SD, and have friends and acquaintances in the E. Islip SD.

From what I've been told, the SD is good but has started to slip because of recent budget rejections which have led to austerity budgets being enacted. Consequently, some programs, such as sports and AP courses, have been cut.

The SD has a number of property tax activists who feel their taxes are high, which has led to the rejection of the budgets. This might be why a previous poster replied with a post about a public meeting, which seems to be a meeting for one of the tax groups.

Also, from what I understand, the SD has been difficult to deal with in the event that your child has special needs, such as autism.

I would say that this is a SD that is at a crossroads.

I hope this helps you in picking your new home.
