Amityville school district - 3/17/2006 7:37:21 PM

I was hoping for some insight into the poorly regarded Amityville school district. I am thinking of purchasing a home in Massapequa. As a result of its location however, it is in the Amityville school district. I am a bit concerened about some of the community members I've seen in and around the immediate neighborhood, let alone the schools which I have not seen. Can anyway offer me an unbiased opinion about the school district and if known the "true" location of this home as it appears to be more in Amityville than actually Massapequa proper? Thanks a lot, hopefully a new neighbor.

I like you am planning to purchase a home in the Massapequa area. My only concern is that due to the location of the house,it has amittyville school district. We have decided that if my son has dificulties within the school setting,I would home school him.Unfortunatly every situation in life has its trade offs.I wish we could send him to private school but at this time we cannot.Good luck in your endevours.

I have lived in the Amityville school district for over nine years and I must say that I was pleased with the level of education that two of my daughters received.  One was aceepted into a four year college with me as the parent having to only pay $5000 for eduction at a away college.  My youngest daugther graduated and received a small schoarship and she is currently enrolled at Suffolk Community College and thsi was because of her circumstances.  So I honestly believe that it depends on the child and the importance of an eduation that's instill they can blossom at any school.  The parent has to stay on top of the school district and attend parents and teachers conferences. You have to be an active parent.  Good luck.

I am glad to get some feed back that is not so emotionally that all objectivity is lost.  I would like some more feedback on this topic.  I am about to close on a house in Massapequa...In Amityville school.  I was quite disappointed at the feedback and am a bit less optimistic about moving into my wonderful home.  I am moving from one of the most ethnicly diverse areas in NY  and wanted to have my son to be exposed to different people and not one group.  As a mental health professional I know the value of such exposure. I think we need to be involved in our children's education.  My son attends a racially diverse independent school and it is highly rated.  I looked forward to moving, meeting and getting involved

I own a home in Massapequa that falls in Amityville school district.  We ended up moving for a bigger house with more property but I can comment on the school district.  First I had my reservations as well. I was very skeptical from what I heard.  I decided to go to the school myself and check it out.  That started changing my opinions.  I met with the teachers, principal etc and they were very professional.  I parked outside the school when school was over and the kids did not seem rowdy and seemed normal.

My wife has a little sister who was growing up in Queens.  She wanted to move out here with us.  She attended Amityville High School for 1 year and she loved it.  I will not get into cultures but she is not black and she stood out there.  She was easily accepted and the friends she made there really helped her fit in and were kind to her.  The guidance counsellor was AMAZING, they really cared at that school.  I have to say my opinion really turned around.  Her sister had the nicest things to say about everyone at the school.  Everyone was nice to her.  The only thing she did not like was having classes in a trailer.  They have these trailer extensions on the side (2 years go) that she had to take classes in and it was hot.

Now, I also did the same thing for the elementary schools but the ratings on the elementary schools were not favorable.  I did not hear good things or see good things at the middle schools, the kids seem rowdy but at that age what can you ask for, its expected.  If I had kids that were high school age, I would not mind too much.  If they were younger, as mine are, I would be concerned.  You have other options since you can send your kids to private schools etc.  Grace day school is near there.  When I live there my neighbors who were West Indian sent their kids to Grace Day School.

If you think about it, you will save 100K easily on a house in the 'East' Massapequa area.  The houses in the East Massapequa area are a lot larger than most of the houses in the SD 23 area.  The money you save you can use that for the private school etc or reinvest.  Now there is one area that I HATE in East Massapequa, it's the area directly behind the dealerships.  It's one block away from Merrick Rd.  If you drive through that area you will know what I mean.  It's only 1 block though.  Any houses on Clocks is good and the other areas are fine.  We lived there for a few years and never had any issues.  Nice neighbors but not a lot kids.  Your kids will not have a lot of kids to play with since I don't think there are that many kids that are between the ages of 3-10.  Most are older.   Good luck.  I will check back if you have any questions.  I hope my review helped.

Hope that helps.

Thank you so much.  I really appreciate your feedback.  I am looking forward to moving, and I find your input very helpful.  I have checked out the Grace Day school and I am considering sending my son.  With all considered I thinking I am a winner.  I am currently paying $15 000 yrly for my son's education in the city.  I am moving from an apartment to a beautiful, large home with a backyard so it it worth it.  One other peice of info I would like is some feedback about after school activities in the area.  I work in the city and would like an after school activity for my son who is 10 yrs old.  Thanks everyone.

Hey 9th grader.  Thanks for your feed back.  You seem like a bright kid and I am sure you will do well.  Hang in there.  As parents we have an obligation to make schools safer for all children, so that kids like you can learn and grow in a safe environment.  Good luck in HS.

To the 9th grade guest:  Thanks for responding!  Remember, your parents are doing the best they can, and obviously since you're in the honors classes and willing to help someone out in this forum, your parents are doing a great job.  Please remember to stay true to  your values, and keep busy after school doing things you know to be right.  At your age it is very easy to follow a crowd and do things that are acceptable and cool rather than what's right.  Hang in there! Good luck in High School.

Sorry, but the only experience I've had with the Amityville school district is poor sportsmanship from HS Teams.  Many HS games have ended in fights and we've experienced actual spitting and cursing from team players. Our team had to get escorted directly to their bus. I've requested that our district simply doesnt play them, but apparently there are 'rules' or such that all teams must play together - I think if there were consequences for poor sportsmanship, then everyone might begin to play nice.

Best advice:  STAY INVOLVED!  Join PTA, coach an after school team or volunteer to keep score when you can - get to know the kids. Definitely not easy since you are working, but make the time - weekends or one night a week come home early - as long as you know the other kids AND THEIR PARENTS!!! you will have a great network to guide your child in the right direction.

By the way, you can still be active with PTA and other parent groups even if you work - there's always something which can be done from home or phone calls which can be made - just get yourself known.

good luck.

Amityville is the worst district I have ever seen. And I have seen alot. You could not pay me to send my children to those schools, especially the middle school.
DONT DO IT
