I am looking for a great private school in nassau county.  My son is 5 and I don't live in a good school district on the island.  Any suggestions?

look into: St Luke's Lutheran, Farmingdale to start. I believe they go up to 2nd grade (?) My girls went there for nursery & pre-k.

Catholic schools also offer smaller class size, faith-based education, but often you dont have a lot of the extra services which sometimes students need.

Most of the elementary & middle public schools should be okay - remember you can be very involved in your child's school Whether it's thru getting a job in the schools or being active in PTA. Make your face known, attend meetings especially Board of Ed Meetings.

hope this helps.

1st make sure about your public school district. how do you know you dont live in a good district? word of mouth? statistics in Newsday?  Neither are a good representation.  Contact your local schools - make an appt with the principal or find out about open houses or activities which may be available to you -- ask for the name and phone number of the local PTA President. As a resident you can join PTA (Parent Teachers Association) and then you can attend meetings and learn about what goes on in the schools first hand.

I would start your search there.  Then, ask your local church for other recommendations and speak to other Mom's.

good luck

That's one of the most intelligent and obvious responses I've seen.  I hope all parents take your advice and get into their schools and research the school community.  They could keep there children in the community, avoid long bus rides and save a good amount of money.

Saint Peter's by the Sea in West Bay shore is amazing..My son is in his second year there, and from a teacher's point of view, the education can not be matched by any school on LI!!

You're really something else.  Your children can attend private school and still be involved in the community by playing Little League, etc.   Parents are willing to make financial sacrifices in order to ensure that their child receives a good education.  The public schools do not have the discipline and promote morals and values the way that private and parochial schools do.  There are some wonderful teachers and programs in the public schools, but public education isn't for everyone.  Long Island public schools are dominated by liberals, and if you are conservative, you don't fit in.  Christians are second-class citizens in public schools, reduced to "holiday" concerts and displays while students celebrate Chanukah and have off for Jewish holidays but not Christian ones.  In my old town, alll but one administrator was Jewish.

It's "their" children, not "there".
